Lesson plan three

In lesson three we provide the students with an opportunity to consolidate their understanding through the use of the Extension Activity Workbooks. The lesson plan includes personalised time for the students to develop their skills on their chosen instrument as well as play live with another Live Performance Vamp.

These plans are a guide to how you might wish to structure your Gigajam lessons and we would welcome any feedback you may have. We hope you find this resource of use.

  • Introduce the students to the Extension Activity Workbooks.
  • Once the students have their books in front of them ask them to go through Task One covering the knowledge covered in Lesson One.
  • Set the students Task Two as their homework.

Using the interactive whiteboard (IWB)

  • Use the workbooks on the IWB to demonstrate how to use them. Show the students how to refer to their lesson notes.

  • Encourage the students to absorb the knowledge learned and use the Extension Activity Workbooks to revise.

Personalised Learning

Give the students time to work at their workstations working through their lessons developing their instrumental skills on their first instrument. The students will be working on the skills contained in lessons one-three of their courses.


To introduce, understand and be able to play eighth notes.

To develop understanding and performance of rhythm by combining whole, half, quarter and eighth notes together.

To build a library of chords by introducing and learning how to play the chords of C5 and D5.


Learn new notes on the A string (3rd string).

Introduce and develop control of String Crossing.

Play simple rock grooves using the notes A, G, D and C.


Introduce the use of the left hand in playing the keyboard.

Introduce the bass clef.

Introduce and understand the role of ledger lines in the musical stave.

Develop understanding and playing of triads.

Introduce and develop understanding and use of the concept of transferability.


Understand and be able to count sixteenth notes.

Develop control of time using single stroke rolls to play quarter notes, eighth notes and sixteenth notes.

Develop simple drum fills using quarter notes, eighth notes and sixteenth notes.

Live Performance Workshop (LPW)

Live Band Session

  • Create bands from the class and get the students to play Vamps One - Three from the LPW Book at the front of the class.
  • Identify four students to form a band and get them to play around Vamps 3 from the LPW book.

  • You may wish to use the Xtractor to support the students and rotate students to come and join the band.
  • You may wish to ask a student to operate the Xtractor software so that they run the session.

Lesson Outcomes

  • Students will start to consolidate the knowledge that is supporting the skills they are performing.
  • Students will add more rhythms, notes and chords to their playing, as well as consolidate the skills they have developed in lessons 1 and 2.
  • There is a further opportunity to for the students to perform live adding new skills into their performances.
